Mountain Survival can be performed on any instrument. There are four “paths” that can be followed. All paths start the same but eventually split and become different. The piece’s rhythms and intervals (if the instrument allows it) should be performed as notated. The whole piece should be transposed to better fit the instrument’s range. Tempo, dynamics, articulation, and other aspects should be decided by the performer.

The piece’s title references a book from the “Choose Your Own Adventure” series.

Mountain Survival was commissioned by hand werk and Ensemble Chronophonie for the project “Unter Vier Ohren” and premiered in Cologne, Germany in June 2013.
